Per Keith's suggestion, I wrote a test program. In the test program, I do an UPDATE of line 1100 and change the "PRINTER SP2" to SP4 etc. The Date/Time stamp on the $ file doesn't change when run in either foreground or background. In my test, the $ recomplied and ran to the right spooler whether in foreground or background. This partially matches what I saw at my customer.

Is the FSTAT done on the $ file or the OBJ? Or both?
