This is why I ask the question. I'm not suggesting we bypass exception logic. I know how important exception logic is in a program. I'm simply trying to ascertain how many folks still use read vs. inquire in applications, and why. Of all the programs I've gone through so far, i've yet to find one where i needed a read instead of an inquire statement.

I can see how making this change would affect programs that handle the error 33. Instead of "I'm sorry, you're not allowed to read this record at this time. Hang tight while I try again", the record would simply read. I'm just wondering in what scenarios (besides utilities) that presents a problem.
