To make READ the same as INQUIRE would destroy EXCP 33 exception logic. Thumbs down.. Within my code (thousands of programs) every file READ/INQUIRE/EXTRACT, etc has it's own EXCP path/label. Every program I write has the following section of code. Error Exception routines make or break your application. Trying to by-pass EXCP logic will only result in failure "QENDITOR". QENDITOR screens never please customers. I define it as follows:
!-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
!- Error Exception Routines -
!-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
9000 IF EXCP EQ ?? and so forth
