The things you're seeing in Tools > Options > Applications are MIME types (I guess they're now calling them "Internet media types", but same difference).
I think I remember seeing an "application/x-comet" somewhere, but I might be hallucinating.
Each file can be a maximum of 1MB in length Uploaded files will be purged from the server on a regular basis.
