program dies with ERROR since we're checking for EOF and EXTRACTED

turns out it's EXCP=46 (non-numeric data in numeric field)

found the record, tried to take the double quote out of the number with MAINT

won't go away..... HUNH?

so.... copy the record elsewhere
delete from the original file
use MAINT in the new file to get rid of the double quote
COPY with MERGE

when I open up with MAINT, the double quote re-appears....

big time HUNH?

seems like the space (@20@) is being trashed to double quote (@22@) because ONE BIT is on and it shouldn't be.....

not sure how to proceed...
