Only had a few times in the last 5-6 years where a customer had a "hung" lock. It did require a reboot of the Comet server as it was a Windows lock that needed clearing. Maybe there's a way to clear a lock without the reboot.

Alternative: LOCK the file, set a control flag, UNLOCK. This keeps the LOCK on for a very short time period. Have your programs check the control flag before opening the file.

I use both methods.
