it turns out that the population of the big (1000 byte file) is not direct.
the input data is separated into GOOD and BAD in 2 work files which happen to be 800 bytes, and then when the BAD file is empty, the GOOD work file is copied to the 1000 byte file
what I didn't expect is that COMET didn't complain when it tried to write beyond 800 in the short buffer, and also didn't complain when it read back more than 800 from the 800 byte buffer.
