Personally, I like your idea of a dedicated box for XAP. I think when it comes to configuring your server, getting the best equipment you can at a reasonable/cost effective price makes sense. I think spending your money wisely will serve you better, and get you better performance. I'd recommend a 64 bit, Server 2012 with at least 16GB of ram (preferably 32 or more). One of your biggest bottlenecks with your number of users is your pipe to the server. If you aren't planning on a 10GB connection to the server, then consider a 4-port gigabit Ethernet card in the server, and bind the ports together to give you a 4gb connection. You'll need a switch that you can bind those ports on as well. That will give you a noticeable increase in speed. Also, consider a pair of mirrored SSD drives for the C: drive on the server, and whatever solution you're considering for your main storage. If you go with Network attached storage, again, try to get a good size connection between that and your switch. On your XAP machine, a fairly powerful machine with SSD drives will give you optimum performance. I think your server, switch, XAP machine, and NAS (if you're using it) are the places where going the extra mile will improve your overall performance system wide. Depending on your number of Comet Anywhere users, you may decide that an additional machine to split up the workload between clients may help. Feel free to email me if you'd like to discuss it further.
