Your performance has FAR more to do with your network speed than most everything else. Granted the server may have a gigabit card, but its speed will be throttled down if ANY component in the path from workstation to server doesn't perform. That has to do with all switches, routers, and even the cable.
I tested my machine here (test4, 1000,10) -- windows xp on an old workstation -- and I get 4.93 seconds. I get 2.33 seconds using CometAnywhere to signature.net, 3000 miles away!
