Yes! There are problems with the Novell Client 4.9+
First of all, the problem you encounter is a bug in the 4.90 client. You need to install at least the SP1 for the client. (see support.novell.com).
We are witnessing a lot of station slow down when using the 4.90+ client. Typically a station freezes for up to 30 seconds when launching a new program (mainly Windows Explorer). Someone I know suggested it had something to do with a security feature in "block signing" but we have yet to prove it. For the Client 4.90 there's a SP1, a SP2 and a Post-SP2 Update "B" (Yes! There was a Post-SP2 Update "A")... I tried both SP1 & SP2 to no avail. Our Novell consultant did confirm that the 4.83 client works fine with 6.5. There seems to be less trouble with that version.
Client 4.83 is up to SP3, we tested only up to 4.83 SP2.
