I did a NT4 to Small Business Server 2003 upgrade in Dec '03. The customer had about eight Win98 PC's. 2003 required that they all be Win98se. And, there was a hotfix for "Directory Services Client" I had to put on all of them. All that was done before any Comet work was done so I don't know if this prevented the problem you're seeing or is irrelevant.
MS Q323466 and MS Q323455. I couldn't find Q323466. The hotfix file is dsclient.exe.
