What probably happened is that the workstation install was unable to update the CometLib.dll in the Comet folder because it was open by someone. Had you by chance left Comet Explorer running when you tried the install?
If you are using Comet.exe in your shortcut to start Comet, remember that all the Comet files will be copied from the install folder to the user's temp folder. This could explain why you find multiple copies.
