Marc's right. Make sure the user is on 271 or above to make sure COSW.INI is in Docs&Settings/All Users and that COSP is looking in the right spot.
My preference has been to set up "super" default fonts in the COSW.INI which cover all laser and inkjet printers.

Font-2=Lucida Console, 12, 10, 0, 6
Line and dot matrix are usually RAW which ignores the above.
A DIRCAT to a laser or inkjet will use Font-0 at 17cpi. DIRCAT to RAW printer will print at the printer's font and cpi.
At this point I'm usually done with the printers :)
If there are special circumstances, I'll set up fonts for a specific printer. Like testing pdf. Or, having a printer at 12cpi for printing CED source or $ files. Or, some weirdness where a printer has to have it's own defaults or one user needs different defaults on that printer.

As I've started to do more windows printing from Comet, I'm starting to see the advantage to setting up fonts in the COSW.INI.
