Comet slow to respond

We are having a problem at a client that when starting Comet it is very slow to load and also when Comet is open but there has been no activity for a little while Comet seems to "go to sleep" and take quite a while to respond.
Just wondering if anyone is having a similar problem or knows what I need to check to figure this out.
The client is running Comet2006 ver.371
