My Two Cents.. and observations...
Please describe in more detail, the condiditions of how/where you were hoping it would feel snappier.
Is it in displaying screens on the client?
Running processes in certain programs ?
What is your network running? Still 100BaseT or GigaBit (or faster)?
Have you compared speed on different hardware client configurations?
(Note: My server is currently connected to a 100base switch, I need to move to my 1GB switch)
(My network backbone is still primarily 100base)
My server RAID6 (write caching turned off) with 7500rpm SATA Drives. (2Ghz Xeon, 2GB memory)
(Though I am not sure how well TEST4 reflects a real world client usage)
My TEST4 Results. 1000 records, 10 iterations to file on Server
To a directory on the server.
From Client PC(AMD 1GHz), without client running on Server (no load) 10 seconds.
From Client PC(AMD 1Ghz), With client running on server, (putting load on server): 15 seconds
From Client PC (AMD 1Ghz), To the TMP directory on my client 40 seconds.
From a client running on the server itself to a directory on the server (no background processes) 3 seconds.
Through a Comet Anywhere Host(P3, 450Mhz) 16 seconds to a directory on the server.
From a Client PC (P4 3.2Ghz), With Client running on the server (putting load on server) to a directory on server: 10 Seconds
From a Client PC (P4 3.2Ghz, Without Client running on server(no load) to a directory on the server: 8 seconds
From a Client PC (P4 3.2Ghz, With Client running on the server (putting load on server) to TMP directory on client: 3 seconds
From a Client PC (P4 3.2Ghz, Without Client running(no load) to TMP directory on client: 3 seconds
My conclusion...
If the Server Process monitor does not show out a maxed CPU, and memory usage is nominal. Need to look at the Server's Disk Subsystem, Network Backbone, and the client PC's themselves.
I'd like to try this again when I get the server and a client using a 1GB network connection.
