Is the use of the legendary #FILES going to become completely obsolete? Are we going to have to create and maintain all file/field definitions in the DbMgr prgm? If so, is the GENUSE program (Q/30) going to be changed to use the new #CFILES or is there going to be a new way to create Use Files from the new #CFILES/DBmgr?

On another note, a warning to all other Comet developers and some questions I have.

I just ran into a problem at a customers site where their old reliable Report Generator stopped working. No error message, no warning msg, every Rep Gen prgm (existing or newly created) just ran back to the monitor. I upgraded this customer last week to the latest Comet Server(7.05) workstation(.385) and the latest REL & UTL directories. I also installed the same upgrade on another system and the Reporter there works fine.

3 hours later I found the newly installed UTL directory contained a newer version of the QREPORTS program. My fault I guess for not reading the release notes of the UTL directory before installing it. I will not do that again. But, it sure would have been helpful if the new QREPORTS prgm said something like "Can not find new #CFILES file" See DbMgr for more info". Something, anything would have been helpful. So, now the customer has two QRPEORTS programs. One on UTL and one on RPG. Is this a how it is going to stay? In the mean time, I have simply renamed the QREPORTS on the UTL directory to XREPORTS, and all seems to running ok.

The reason the other install/upgrade did not run into the same problem, was because their "UTL" directory is configured after their "RPG" directory. Therefore, they are still running the old (and reliable) QREPORTS. Is it documented somewhere what order directories should be accessed in?

Is there an over all implentation plan to migrate to this new #CFILE system? Did I miss an email somewhere?

Lost in New York.
