In that scenario ("hot spare"), a failure of the dongle is the weakest link. That is to say: in a lightning strike, whatever -- if the spare server is unharmed but the dongle is fried, your plans go out the window, and your $5000 spare server plan is derailed by a $20 piece of plastic.
I'd vote for software keys. It's a lot easier to call [insert-vendor-here] and get a new key issued, rather than wait for a dongle to be shipped out.
I've experimented with VMWare/Virtualbox/etc in the past, and the dongle has always been the stumbling block. I'd much rather virtualize our Comet server.
From the Signature perspective: no more license fees paid to [insert-dongle-vendor].
Software keys are good enough for the rest of the world, why not Comet?
