Keith is thinking downside up. Comet should host extensions or plug ins. And the basics, the plumbing (sorry Joe) is there.
The ENTER is a port for using extensions and I humbly (me???) point out my RepRpl tool that allows for an ENTER program that returns a string which RepRpl pops into a Reporter spec.
Now if someone smarter than me would build a ENTER to put up a directory tree, or make the Explorer an ENTER program....
We were promised PROCS in the next version of Comet and that's another type of extension. Someone writes an elegant tool and all you need to use it is to CALL it.
Finally, if I remember correctly, the Q machine had linkage editor.
Three places to connect to OPS (Other People's Software) - at compile time, at link time and at run time.
That's what extensions are -- OPS.
