We are in the discussion stages of a redesign and updating of the DbMgr
program. Now that it is required for use with the Reporter, the
limitations of its current implementation need to be addressed.
As we see it, there are 2 basic functionalities DbMgr must provide:
- Creation and maintenance of #CFILES records
- Import / Export of #CFILES records
Creation And Maintenance Of #CFILES Records
This includes definition of:
- Files
- Fields
- Calculations based on fields
- Inter-file relationships
Import / Export Of #CFILES Records
This includes:
- from / to the legacy #FILES with merge option
- from / to other #CFILES with merge option
- from / to an IB FORMAT statement
In addition it should include the following features not allowed by
the current DbMgr:
- Easier editing of records perhaps in a data grid control where
all fields can be seen at once rather than one at a time
- Selection of the directory for the #CFILES to be maintained
- Recognition of text files as valid data files which can be defined
- Inclusion of all field attributes in the maintenance display.
Currently editmask, field length for total, and overriding field length
for display are not maintainable. I know there is some controversy
about including editmask so we'll have to consider that. We'd like your comments about this design. We know some of you have
developed dictionary maintenance programs for the legacy #FILES. Let
us know what features would make a new DbMgr most useful to you.
