DBX to Excel problem...>

Has anybody figured out a way to prevent Excel from taking bin location E-15 and turning it into an exponent? Taking Mill pattern number 13/06 and turning it into a date? End-user contends that in the first generation of CDE ( .d00 files ), they output to Excel and that did not happen.
