Something isn't quite right in the DHCP setup. Typically workstations get at least a weeks lease of an IP. My XP workstations gets 8 days. Usually, about the 4th day the DHCP lease is renewed. The workstation runs 24/7 so the IP address stays the same until I do a workstation or server upgrade. My laptop which is usually off the network for the weekend and at night gets its lease renewed what I reattach.
For NT class PCs run "IPCONFIG /ALL" from a command prompt to see what the lease info is. For Win9x, run winipcfg.
And, its no biggie to have a fixed IP. Usually, the server has a range of IP's set aside for fixed IP uses that DHCP can't use.
