I always tought the file attributes should be inherited from the directory. So in order for a file to be R/W even when erase/create the R/W flags should come from the folder inheritence properties. Otherwise it is true that maintaining R/W properties on a per-file basis would be a headache.
For ease of management, I always grant the rights on a directory level to GROUPS of users. It is easier to give the Comet group the required rights to run/use Comet.
Same rules as when using Active Directory... Easy to Use, Easy to Manage!
