can't compress print and getting garbage

Customer recently went from W98 to XP Pro. Now ini has printers address as a UNC ( \\linda\hplj1100 ) vs the old local printer (HP lj100). When she prints using the unc compression doesn't happen properly and she gets a wrap around. Using the old local way seems to still work fine at least for the local system. Others using a shared printer have the problem. Also, we found that the compress print part worked fine using the ? printer. Same physical printer but not using the UNC.

The customers is also experiencing problems with garbage on invoices using the UNC printer name but no problem using the original name without a UNC.

Any ideas?? Seems something isn't getting through to the printer but???
